EU OIL: Fisher Boel: optimism on labelling compulsion
“The solution proposed by Italy on the compulsion of labelling of top quality oil is likely to be realized”. This announced M.
Fisher Boel in Rome after her meeting with the Secretary of State for Agricultural Policies Luca Zaia. The European
responsible explained- The indication of the origin country on the label of the extra virgin will be compulsory, this is the
best guarantee of quality-. As for the “inferior” productions (not extra virgin), the EU Secretary for the Agriculture said,
every single country can decide if to indicate the country of origin on the label. The same for the oils made of different oil
blends, for which the same mechanism as for honey is adopted “we need same more time to discuss this theme especially with Spain –
the secretary Fischer Boel underlined- but I am optimistic. Besides I believe that such initiatives on labelling can favour a
future cooperation with Italy”. Next October a “White Book” will be published and we will organize meetings till the end of the year.
