Cancer : Colon, the Mediterranean diet reduces the risk (-4%-5%)
Citrus, tomatoes, fish and olive oil, the key-food of the Mediterranean diet, can reduce 4%-5% the risk of colon cancer ;the colon cancer is considered one of the so-called “big killer”, that is to say the tumours that kill more people, with about 40.000 new cases every years. The Italian Association of Medical Oncology (AIOM) has invited not to abandon the good habits of the Mediterranean diet in its congress taking place in Verona these days. The elected President of AIOM Carmelo Iacono has underlined:” the Mediterranean diet is a key-element in the primary prevention of cancer. Thanks to it fewer cases of cancer had been recorded in the south of Italy till some years ago.
But lately things have been changing and the new food habits spreading everywhere have contributed to an increase of this disease even in the South of Italy, reaching almost the same levels as the Northern part of our country and other nations in Europe. We hope this trend will change”. The Italian Oncologist Departments will be provided with a cooking video course, available also in the sites: www.aiom.it and www.intermedianews.it, just to emphasize the importance of good food habits and prevention. This video-course has been realized with the help of the pharmaceutical society Roche.
