Agriculture: about a half of the olive groves in Val Petronio can be cultivated
The olive-trees in Val Petronio are in a good state and most of them which were abandoned can be recovered. Only 66,72 acres resulted not to be recovered out of 2.527,89 a acres of land cultivated with olive-trees, and 1.176,22 acres (46%) are perfectly farmed. If all these olive-groves were recovered they could produce almost 40.000 quintals of olive, that is to say 8.000 quintals of extra-virgin olive oil. The possible income could reach € 6.350.00. this is the result coming out from a study promoted and financed with € 20 thousand given by the province of Genova (Genua), the town-council of Sestri Levant ( leader in the project) Moneglia, Casarza Ligure, Castiglione Chiavarese and Val Petronio. The results of the project have been shown today in the Province-seat during the meeting about the development of olive-culture in the eastern area of Genoa.
This study lasted eight months and was carried on by the agronomists Federica Ferretti and Stefano Castellana with the help of the 1700 associates of Sestri Cooperative of the olive-farmers while the cartographic maps were realized by CAAR ( the Regional Centre of applied agromethereology from the little town of Sarzana). The study, presented through cartographic maps, pictured objectively the situation of olivelands in the area of Val Petronio, thus indicating precisely the olive-groves perfectly farmed, some which need more care, almost abandoned lands but still to be recovered and those which cannot be recovered.
