FOOD: OIL “PRIMAFRINGITURA”( First Press) Feast at Cumiana
The olives are getting more and more in number on the hills near Turin, and at Cumiana the return to an old production has been celebrated with a feast called “ Festa della Primafrangitura”.
“The new olive-trees at Cumiana are only three years old”- Roberto Castelli (the Major) has explained- “we have collected 17 hectares uncultivated land growing about 7.000 olive trees. The activity has involved 87 private producers and farms, there is a real possibility to widen implantations on hundreds of hectares”. The example at Cumiana has been joined by some neighbouring commons , were 3.000 plants are being grown. In this feast this new oil has been compared to the products from Liguria, Abruzzo, Apulia, Tuscany, Calabria, Sicily and Basilicata and other oils from other areas in Piemonte, Canavese and the hills near Turin( Chieri and Merentino). On this occasion even the prize “ Oil and olives” was assigned by ASA (The Press Association for Agrofood in Italy): “for the care and professionalism in the defence of extra virgin olive oil and the excellence of Italian food”.
