Health training centre for the Mediterranean diet

The first standing training place on Mediterranean diet: this is an initiative resulted from the joint between the town council of Pollica in Cilento, and the new medical school from Salerno (an association for research and cultural promotion founded by some doctors from Salerno). The main goal of this Centre-placed in the medieval palace “Vinciprova”- allowed by the major of Pollica –is to carry on Ancel Keys and Jeremiah Stamler’s work (the two U.S. scientists who created the most famous diet in the world, spreading it and its benefits) “ forty years ago – Adriana Manzo, the responsible of this centre explains- Keys and Stamler arrived in Italy to develop their research on cardiovascular diseases and they found out that this pathology was certainly less present along the coast. At Pioppi, in the area of Pollica, they analysed the positive effects of the Mediterranean diet on our health. This diet is made of poor food, based on vegetables, pulses, fresh fish and olive oil. Keys died in 2004 when he was 104; and Stamler, who is now 88, was present on the opening day of this training centre”.
This centre was to train and update people with the help of the most important Italian and foreign Universities. Besides this centre will promote and organize cultural scientific and artistic events in Italy and abroad. Even the first existing museum of the Mediterranean diet born at Pioppi ,will join the centre to attract the “ non-experts”attention through a “Cilentana” cooking- lab ( Cilento is a southern area in the province of Salerno).
