Food-The Mediterranean diet: a candidate for Unesco Heritage
In Barcelona the nomination of the Mediterranean
diet as immaterial cultural heritage of UNESCO was
presented. The joint nomination was subscribed by
Spain, Italy, Greece and Morocco; through
working teams these countries will suggest the
reasons( based on culture, history, production,
landscape, food and society) to justify the reward
requested to the body of ONU. The dossier will be
then analysed by UNESCO, which will give an
answer within winter 2009. The secretary for
agriculture and food, Paolo De Castro attended the
ceremony where he emphasized: "the main
agricultural productions typical of the
Mediterranean diet represent about 40% of the
whole European production, over € 118 milliard
value. This value increases further in the member-
states overlooking the Mediterranean sea.
