Agriculture; Trentino: abundant olive picking

In Trentino there will be another abundant year for the olive, fostered by the wet climate during fruit blooming and flowering. San Michele Agricultural Institute has foreseen it. The olive picking has started in the last days, in all the oil-areas in Trentino, mainly placed in Alto Garda and precisely in the commons of Riva, Nago-Torbole, Arco, Tenno e Deo. In 2008 14400 quintals were produced, the most relevant production since the 1985’s bad frost. The technicians of the agricultural institute – as the technical bulletin Iasma in these days has reported – explain that this year’s expectations are similar, if not slightly superior. This depends on 2008’s rain, growing new vegetation. Besides the frequent showers in 2009’s spring have determined a good differentiation of the blooms, an abundant flowering and a good growing of the fruits. “Even from a sanitary point of view – Franco Michelotti of San Michele Centra explains – there have not been particularly problematic situations: oil flies did not spread so much in the areas closest to the lake”.. the period where the olives produce top-quality oil is till half November. The San Michele technicians advice the ones who have a lot of olives to be picked and the ones addressing the production to commerce, to profit this period.
